Description - An exceptional pair of Art Deco era sterling silver insect brooches, circa 1930's-Early 1940's.
Insect Jewellery was very popular during this era, a trend that began during the Victorian period continued through the Art Deco & Retro era.
These charming brooches were described as bees or butterfly -style insects, a highly collectable motif from this period. The" bee "representing industriousness & social organisation.
Each brooch is finely constructed in solid 925 sterling silver featuring richly coloured Green & a Teal Colour wings, and are intricately set with marcasite stones & expressive coral eyes.
The shade of green & teal are very much colours of this era .
The workmanship and materials strongly suggest Central European origin, most likely Austria or Czechoslovakia, regions renowned for their marcasite silver jewellery during the period.
These gorgeous pieces were often worn on collars, lapels or heavier garments , making them both decorative & distinctive.
The back of the bees has the original pin & hinge fittings and are functional.
They are both in lovely condition the enamel remains vibrant & intact. The marcasite stones are all present & secure .
They measure across the wing span 40mm each & weigh individually 5.85 grams each.
