Description - A Fine Victorian Coromandel Gentleman's Travelling Case , " Chapman & Son, Carlisle & Watts, Edinburgh.
A distinguished and fully attributable Victorian gentleman's travelling case, executed in richly figured coromandel wood & dating precisely to 1870., retaining its original sterling silver mounted fittings & engraved monogram. Coromandel wood also known as Calamander is considered functionally extinct.
This is an especially desirable example, combining a named Edinburgh case maker with fully London hallmarked silver, a pairing that reflects a high quality upper tier commission.
Case / Box Maker - Carlisle & Watts, North Hanover St Edinburgh
Silversmith - Chapman & Son & Co ( Oliver & Middleton Chapman.
Assay Office - London.
Carlisle & Watts were noted makers of fine travelling cases, often supplying discerning and affluent clients.
The use of London assayed silver suggests a piece produced for a more prestigious retail market.
Each Silver lid is engraved with an ornate intertwined Victorian monogram ( likely " J.K.C." )
Such engraving would have been applied at the time of purchase confirming this case was specially commissioned for its original owner, rather than a standard retail item a detail that adds both historical significance and collector appeal.
Silver & Hallmarks -
The sterling silver gilt ( gold washed ) mounts / lids are fully and clearly hallmarked .
Lion Passant - Sterling Silver
Leopard's Head - London Assay Office.
Duty Mark ( Queen Victoria Head )
Date Letter - " P " - 1870
Maker's Mark - Chapman & Son & Co
Interior & Appointments -
Original fitted interior with heavy cut glass gars/ containers & bottles one glass container ( soap ) I believe is shattered on one corner & the heavy glass bottom has a a crack across it but because of the glass thickness it is quite stable, happy to send through photos if needed.
There are eight heavy glass containers in total with sterling silver lids & what I believe is a replacement ink well which is also in heavy glass with a brass fitted collar.
The case retains part of a gentleman's grooming manicure set I do believe the scissors are a later replacement. Quite rare to find them with the complete manicure set unfortunately.
Rich tufted purple velvet lid , manicure set & purple velvet lined secret drawer.
A highly desirable concealed ( secret ) drawer compartment. A push in button at the bottom edge of the underside of the lid is used to open this secret drawer.
The box / case - constructed in premium coromandel one of the most prized timbers used in 19th century luxury furniture & goods, with beautifully figured grain & brass bound edges.
Condition - Very Good antique condition overall , there is some super fine cracks on the coromandel on the outside lid, honest wear consistent with age, the glass bottles / jars present beautifully again with light honest wear.
The case remains structurally sound & highly displayable. It is a solid piece quite heavy.
