Description - An Elegant and Highly decorative Early Edwardian Sterling Silver Mounted Wrythen Glass " Glug Glug " Decanter, beautifully crafted by renowned Birmingham silversmith Henry Matthews.
The hand blown optic wrythen glass body is complimented by an exquisite pierced and repoussé sterling silver mount displaying flowing Art Nouveau scrolls and foliage.
The matching silver mounted stopper continues the intricate design, creating a wonderfully balanced and sophisticated piece.
Often referred to by collectors as a " Glug Glug " decanter, the elegant neck produces the distinctive glugging sound when poured - a charming feature that has made these bottles highly sought after for over a century.
Henry Mathews was one of Birmingham's finest silversmiths, celebrated for producing exceptional silver mounted dressing table pieces, scent bottles and decorative glass ware. His work is admired for its quality, craftsmanship and timeless Art Nouveau styling.
The stopper has the makers mark for Henry Matthews Lion Passant, Date Letter B for 1901
Interestingly the silver collar bears Chester Assay Marks For 1899. Both are by Henry Matthews adding a fascinating hallmark detail to this beautifully crafted Edwardian Art Nouveau Decanter.
Wrythen Glass - comes from the old English word "writhe", meaning to twist. It refers to glass that has been hand moulded with a spiral or twisted optic pattern before being blown into its final shape.
The twisting catches & refracts light beautifully, giving the glass a shimmering appearance.
Wrythen decoration has been used since the 17th century and enjoyed a revival during the Victorian & Edwardian periods, particularly in fine British Art Glass.
The decanter measures 22cm x approx 8cm diameter at base.
The glass stopper has a chip just under the silver neck not seen once stopped is placed in decanter.
