Description - This is a beautiful 19th century Italian Shell cameo mounted in an Australian " Apex " Gold frame which dates too 1920's- 1940.

A finely carved antique shell cameo depicting " Psyche " the mythological embodiment of the soul, shown in serene classical profile, with delicately carved butterfly wings.,

The symbol of transformation, love & immortality.

This beautiful cameo is hand carved from shell and displays the refined modelling associated with the Great Italian carving centres of the late 19th century, most notably Naples & Torre del Greco.

The facial features are elegantly proportioned, the drapery softly flowing & the wings carefully articulated giving depth & quiet movement to the composition.

During the 20th Century we believe the carving was professionally remounted in Australia in a 9ct gold open work frame stamped 9ct APEX an Australian jewellery manufacturer G & E Rodd under their registered Trademark " Apex" used between 1920 - to the late 1940's in 1948 the Mark was replaced with " Rodd".

The mount is 9ct solid yellow gold featuring graceful leaf detailing , a traditional brooch fitting with safety chain & a integrated bail allowing the piece to be worn as with a brooch or suspended from a chain.

The brooch pendant measures 40mm not including the hanging loop by 32mm wide approx & weighs. a lovely 9.21 grams.

This layered history Italian 19th century artistry combined with Australian interwar gold craftsmanship gives the cameo international & local provenance.

Professionally valued in June 2021 at - $2,700 gold prices have risen considerably since then..
