Description - This is a wonderful traditional style of Scottish Thistle Brooch by prominent Scottish Silversmiths & Jewellers Ward Brothers. They were active from the late 19th century until around the 70's in the 20th century.
This brooch was handmade in 1957.
They originated in Glasgow & Edinburgh they later moved to Birmingham to increase production. They made High Quality Sterling Silver pieces & occasionally gold Scottish Themed Jewellery.
Ward Brother's jewellery was high quality & very popular.
The traditional design of the thistle is an element of the Scottish coat of arms symbolising tenacity & resistance
According to belief the Thistle " ornament is a powerful talisman that protects a person from damage & the Evil eye "
This beautiful brooch is hand made & hand engraved, crafted in solid sterling silver with 9ct rose gold highlights on the border & in the thistle leaves.
Clearly assayed on the verso for Glasgow 1957 makers mark WBs for Ward Brothers & 9ct gold for the rose gold leaves etc.
The brooch has a 50mm diameter so quite a large piece, with the centre being set with a round cut citrine a lovely yellow shade & a round cut Lilac purple amethyst
Each gemstone is six-claw set & are 3.0carat each measuring 9.8mm & 9.7mm respectively .
The leaves of the central thistles are in 9ct rose gold as well as the thistles & leaves around the border of the brooch.
There is also beautifully detailed hand engraving on the border featuring foliage & an etched zig-zag design.
The pin on the verso is in base metal the fixtures are in sterling silver.
This is a wonderful example of Scottish themed jewellery crafted by a highly skilled craftsman beautifully detailed & in fabulous condition.
